Disaster Relief Kits

The Mission Committee, Sisters in Christ, and Men’s Accountability Group feel that First United Methodist Church in Gallatin needs to be ready to act immediately in the event of local natural disasters. With the help of our congregation, we stock and maintain a “disaster relief closet” with materials that can quickly be dispersed when the need arises. In these kits are items that a person would need before the Red Cross or other emergency agencies arrive such as work gloves and ponchos. The first people on the scene need to be able to begin salvaging whatever remains so a tarp along with garbage bags, safety glasses and shop rags are included. Personal supplied of toilet paper, paper towels and a manual can opener will also benefit as immediate clean-up continues. These supplies are uniformly grouped and distributed to our local communities. As the need arises, these kits will be restocked and ready to help our neighbors in distress.

Children’s Jail Ministry

The Children’s Jail Ministry takes place in the visitation room at the Sumner Country jail. Volunteers work in a corner of this area, providing activities, and support to the children who come with their families to visit (via TV monitors) relatives who are in jail, often a Mom or Dad of the child. Sharing God’s love with these children is our mission; we do not preach any doctrine or denomination.

Volunteering at the jail is the primary opportunity for involvement. A volunteer can work once a month, twice a month, or as many times a month as desired. Other volunteers set up the schedule once a month by calling and emailing volunteers and also putting the schedule on line. Volunteers are also needed to wash and clean toys. Another major way church members can be involved is keeping the ministry in their prayers.

Our monetary needs are minimal, replacement of supplies and purchasing appropriate new toys, or for example and recently two file cabinets.
